Veril Grande Fuerteventura — Freediving Guide
What is Veril Grande?
Veril Grande (‘the great ledge’) is an underwater rocky formation located off the coast near Morro Jable. It features a steep drop-off beginning at shallow depth and falling into much deeper water — creating a wall environment rich in marine life and excellent visibility. Well known among local scuba divers but largely unknown to visiting freedivers.
Conditions and Depth
- Depth: drops from approximately 8 metres to 30+ metres along the wall
- Visibility: typically 15–25 metres, often better
- Current: variable — can be strong on exposed days
- Water temperature: 19–24°C depending on season
- Best conditions: morning sessions on calm days
Marine Life at Veril Grande
- Large moray eels in rocky crevices
- Schools of barracuda hovering in mid-water
- Stingrays on sandy patches at the base of the wall
- Bream, wrasse and parrotfish along rocky sections
- Occasional sea turtles and angel sharks in surrounding sandy areas
- Octopus under rocks and in small caves
Who is Veril Grande For?
Best suited for freedivers with some experience — PADI Freediver level or equivalent. The shallower sections (8–15 metres) are accessible to advanced beginners on their second or third open water session. For PADI Advanced Freedivers, the deeper wall offers genuinely exciting diving with long-distance visibility.
